Summary:The Georgia Security and Immigration Compliance Act (SB 529) requires among other provisions that public employers and contractors with the State must verify the status of newly hired employees. The effective dates for public employers and contractors, including subcontractors, to participate in I-9 verification are: July 2007 for every public employer, contractor and subcontractor with 500 or more employees; July 2008 for every contractor and subcontractor with 100 or more employees, and July 2009 for every contractor and subcontractor with 99 or fewer employees.
SB 184 states that the employer’s reliance on I-9 verificaiton provides a safe harbor, as does the employee’s presentation to the employer of a valid license or identification card issued by the Georgia Department of Driver Services. The law only applies with regard to employees hired after January 1, 2008. |
