Criminal History Checks often save employers money even before they are conducted. That’s because when prospective employees know they will be screened for illegal drug use, criminal records and other background information, they will often decide not to fill out an application if they have something to hide. This can save a company significant amounts of time and money and help reduce or eliminate costly litigation resulting from negligent-hiring lawsuits.
Both government and private-sectors jobs increasingly require Criminal History Checks as a condition of employment. This is particularly true for positions that require extensive contact with children, the elderly, or the disabled.
Employers can have their human resource department do this research or select from a wide variety of web-based companies who will screen for criminal backgrounds. If the decision is to use an outside vendor, business owners and managers should insist that researchers get their information directly from the appropriate court records, rather than rely on Internet databases that can sometimes be outdated or inaccurate.
