There are no legal, cultural or practical impediments to checking past education and employment histories through verifications in China, as long as the individual has given permission for you to do so. We strongly advise you to be in possession of a signed release letter/authorization form before starting the checks. We would like to have the subject's full name in Chinese to perform each verification. This is due to the fact that all schools and employers simply record names in Chinese rather than in English. Most Chinese citizens do not have an English name. If they do, it is often not considered to be a legal name on their passport or "HouKou" (certificate of family registration). It's very challenging to verify a student's degree using an English name. In some instances there are over 10 different ways to translate from an English to a Chinese name.
Different from US and western countries, there are two different types of education verifications in China: Graduation Certificates and Degree Certificates. Graduation Certificates are issued separately from an actual Degree Certificate so a student can obtain Graduation Certificates, but does not hold a Degree Certificate at all. For example, a student passed all the tests to graduate from a school, but failed to pass the test to get a bachelor or master's degree; a very interesting thing in Chinese education structure.
Therefor we highly recommend you verify Degree Certificates instead of Graduation Certificates. As a requirement, you need to provide the subject's certificate copy to verify "Degree Certificates."
